How To Best Study For Finals

December 15th, 2009

If you are trying to get the best grades out of your finals, there are a few tips you should keep in mind. Below is advice that was told to me at an early age that played a huge part in the good grades I got throughout high school and college.

Don’t Stress – Although finals can get to be a stressful time of the year, try not to worry so much. Many times the stress that we place on ourselves negatively effects how well we study and perform during tests. Its important to get 8 hours of sleep each night so you are well rested, calm, and collected throughout your days. You should also look into practicing meditation or other relaxation exercises to put your body in a calm state during times where you normally would be stressed out.

Study Early – I know its hard, but try not to procrastinate. Studying early will allow you to take your time and go through the material at your own pace opposed to cramming it all in the night before you exam. When you give yourself ample amount of time to learn the material, you can make study guides and flash cards that can help you to understand the information much better.

Know You Style Of Studying – Many people are better when they study in groups, other people are better when the can concentrate on their own. Know where your strengths lay and which study method allows you to learn the material better. If you are better at studying alone, then don’t study with friends, and vice versa.

Important Points To Note: A lot of these points are all inter-related. For example, if you get a good amount of sleep, chances of becoming stressed out are dramatically decreased. If you study early, chances are that you’ll put yourself in a good position to understand the material better which makes finals much less stressful. Most important point that I can make is to try your best at preparing for the test. Whenever I was studying for finals, I knew that the only thing I had control of was how hard I prepared for the test. If I did my best to prepare, I was happy and knew that whatever grade I got on the test didn’t matter because I did all that I could have done.

ISEE Study Tips

October 16th, 2009

When you’re taking the ISEE exam there are a lot of study tips you can follow on the days leading up to the exam that will help to minimize stress and be more prepared. Of course it makes sense to review what you’ve already learned but things like good sleep, diet and relaxation can also go a long way to making the study that you do do most effective.

Proper Sleeping Patterns

A good amount of rest helps you to retain more information and study more effectively. This is most important the night before you relax. Be sure to get a good nights rest of at least 8 hours sleep.

Good Diet

A good and healthy diet helps your brain to function more effectively and ultimately will help you learn better and faster. A diet low on sugar and other sorts of junk food is highly recommended. Particularly the night before the exam.

Minimize Stress

Keep a cool head and remember, its only an exam and most likely one you have studied well for. For parents, be sure to let your child know that they have worked hard and reassure them that if they relax they will do much better.

Its a good idea to spend a little time each day relaxing. Constant study without breaks can actually harm your test prep more in the long run.

Practice Question Are a Must!

An exam is not like learning in the classroom. A student is required to put down on paper everything they know in a really short period of time. For this reason its hugely important to become familiar with the test format before taking the ISEE test. Study tips are great but if you dont know what you should be studying they are fairly pointless.
